Nickelback has recently been slapped with a copyright infringement lawsuit over their song “Figured You Out” as Vancouver band Econoline Crush seems to think that the more popular rock group ripped off their song “All That You Are”. According to legal documents Nickelback “maliciously and willfully and with a conscious disregard” for Econoline Crush’s song. The band is seeking “all damages permitted by Federal copyright law” including actual damages, along with statutory and punitive damages. It’s been years since the song came out, why did they decide to pursue the lawsuit now? I wonder if there are any merits to their claims.
British boy band The Wanted kick off their 2011 with a brand new single called “Gold Forever”. The new track will serve as this year’s Comic Relief song (charity single) in the UK. “Gold Forever” is a mid tempo ballad with a feel good vibe. It’s also infused with some electronica and dance elements. It’s not the best but it’s not bad either. I actually kind of like it. The Wanted may have their most clear opportunity to score a hit with the Comic Relief support as well as having no big competition for when it’s released. And if you’re wondering when that is, the song will be available in the UK on March 13th.

American rock band Panic! At the Disco recently premiered the music video for their single “The Ballad of Mona Lisa” via MTV.com. The John Feldmann and Butch Walker co-produced track serves as the official first single from the band’s upcoming studio album “Vices & Virtues” which is set to hit stores on March 29th. This will also mark the first release of Panic! At the Disco as a new two-man band. I loved this song when I first heard and I just fell in love with it all over again after watching the epic video. The concept was amazing! Wow. That’s all I have to say.

After a bit of a controversy surrounding the departure of Josh Farro and Zac Farro from Paramore, it looks like at least one of them is ready to move on. Josh has actually assembled a new band called Novel American. The guitarist said “Basically, I met these guys in high school — they’re a little older than me, and that’s a big deal when you’re in high school, they were always in the cool crowd — but we connected after high school, and we got together after the whole Paramore thing, and I was like, ‘I don’t know if I want to be in another band, but I called the guys, we got together, we wrote and we jammed, and it was great, so we decided, ‘Let’s do another band.’ And, honestly, I had some ideas that just didn’t fit with Paramore, and I said, ‘Guys, we can try these,’ and they just loved them, and so that’s really how it all started.” Are you curious as to what Josh and his new band have to offer?
It’s been four years since the duo put out any new music but fans of The White Stripes were still hoping for the best. However, the band is no more. Meg White and Jack White have decided to go their separate ways and continue to pursue other musical ventures without the other. On their official website’s main page, they explain “The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health. It’s for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way… The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful.” All good things come to an end. I wish them the best of luck with their future endeavors.

The project’s lead single “The Ballad of Mona Lisa” was officially released earlier this week so you know that the rock band has to start with promo rounds. Brendon Urie and Spencer Smith, the only remaining members of the lineup, kicked things off with an appearance on Billboard’s “Live Q&A”, where they performed an acoustic performance of the lead single. It’s the perfect execution and I’m not itching to see how they would perform the song with the drums and electric guitars.

It was a bit of a shock to hear about guitarist Josh Farro and drummer Zac Farros departure from Paramore but it seems that the two rock stars have been wanting to leave for quite some time. In an official statement on Joshs blog, the brothers gave some insight as to what exactly has been going on and what led to their exit. Josh wrote I had a statement typed ready to post to you guys but Hayley released one without my permission. The full statement went on about other issues with lead singer Hayley Williams and how she was treated by the label as more important than the rest of the band. Josh even wrote In reality, what started as natural somehow morphed into a manufactured product of a major label, riding on the coattails of Hayleys dream. Yikes. What do you have to say about that Hayley?
Travis Barker is on a mission to help kids find cool alternatives to alcohol and drugs and its been reported that the rock star is starting by donating a bunch of drum kits to New York City schools. Sources close to Travis say that hes partnering up with fellow punk rocker Toby Morse from the band H2O to promote sober living through music among young students and to spread the word that not every rock star is a drug addict. Its being said that Travis plans to donate between 10 to 20 drum kits a year to NYC schools through Tobys organization One Life One Chance.

Everyone else pretty much knows its impossible to be true so its great that they found some humor in it.
A lot of Broadway aficionados and Green Day fans will have the time of their lives come January 1. The rock bands lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong was originally slated to take over the role of St. Jimmy in American Idiot for eight performances but the rock star will now return for the role for 50 performances in 2011. Billie Joe will be on stage on January 1 to January 9, January 18 to January 30 and February 10 to February 27. If his September performance is any indication of how the show is going to be, I think its going to be a great run for the Green Day singer.
Sources are reporting that The Black Eyed Peas are set to headline the Super Bowl Half Time Show at the 2011 championship game on February 6th. The hip hop band will be the first urban music performers to play the Super Bowl since the infamous Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction in 2004. Over the past couple of years, rock stars like Paul McCartney, Bruce Springsteen, the Rolling Stones and Prince have been given the coveted spot. But BEP seems to have planned this perfectly as the Super Bowl performance will lead up to the release of their upcoming album The Beginning.

15 years ago, Smashing Pumpkins lead singer Billy Corgan ignited a feud with indie rock band Pavement. 15 years later, the rock star is still at it. As you all know, Smashing Pumpkins is re-launching for a new album and tour later this month. One of the tour stops is in Brazil and Billy has just learned that he will be sharing the stage with his rivals Pavement. Billy then took to his Twitter to comment, saying Just found out SP is playing with Pavement in Brazil. It’s gonna be 1 of those New Orleans type funerals. I say that because they represent the death of the alternative dream, and we follow with the affirmation of life part. Funny how those who pointed the big finger of ‘sell out’ are the biggest offenders now. Yawn. they have no love We’ll be the band up there playing NEW songs because we have the love. Talk about bad blood.
One Republic has recently debuted the music video for Good Life. The song is the latest single coming off of the bands sophomore album Waking Up, which is available in stores now. The song is likable enough with its nice lyrics and melody but I dont think this would be a huge hit for Ryan Tedder and company. But I am happy that the band is getting the chance to get more singles out from Waking Up. As for the new video, which was directed by Ethan Lader, its good in its simplicity. It simply shows One Republic playing the song in the countryside with a carefree spirit.

Grave robbers have hit the burial site where Slipknot bassist Paul Gray was laid to rest back in May and took two cherished statues. Due to this horrible crime, the rest of the rock band is on a mission to get the stuff back. The remaining band members posted a message on their website saying There were statues of a gargoyle as well as a Buddha that were placed at Pauls grave by his friends and family that were taken. We ask that whoever did this, please return the items no questions asked. If anyone has any information about the stolen items please let us know.
If youre an insomniac and your iTunes isnt filled to the brim with Coldplay music, then youre doing yourself a disservice. According to a Travelodge survey, the UK band is on top of the list of artists that helps people fall asleep. And just in case Coldplay isnt enough for you, the rest of the top 10 are as follows: Michael Buble, Snow Patrol, Alicia Keys, Jack Johnson, Taylor Swift, Mozart, Barry White, Leona Lewis and Radiohead. How cool is it that Mozart managed to creep in between all those contemporary artists? Do these artists help you fall asleep or are there others that do the trick for you?
Kings of Leon drummer Nathan Followill recently took a cheap dig at the band Arcade Fire in a recent interview. The rock star said Now it’s cool to have 14 people in your band doing everything but contributing musically, running around with a helmet on your head, hitting it with a drumstick. You gotta look at what you’re in this for: the love of music? The fame? You can have all that if you’re smart and play your cards right and don’t become a dick. Hes apparently talking about something that band member Richard Parry has done in various performances. I think the diss is unjustified. Arcade Fire has consistently put out great albums and seem completely committed to their music and fans. I cant say the same about Kings of Leon who keeps complaining about their mainstream popularity.
According to the bands manager Irving Azoff, Van Halen is reportedly plotting a tour for next year. Irving revealed the news while fulfilling his duties as Live Nation Ticketmaster chairman at a concert promoters meeting this past Monday. If youre a fan of the rock icons, dont get too excited though. Irving has broken promises before. He also promised that Van Halen would have a tour this year but it never happened. It would be cool if the 2011 tour does happen though. But they need to make up for making us anticipate a tour this year that never took place.
MGMTs record label, Columbia, has apparently put the band under some pressure to change up their style after bosses at the label were unimpressed with their latest release Congratulations. Andrew Van-Wyngarden said I definitely think our music will change in the future because Congratulations is almost two years old now. We have some ideas and have been talking about possible directions of where to go next. We are just in much more positive mental states than when we wrote Congratulations. We’re less anxious. We’ve been looking at relationships with the label during the recording process and it’s quite different this time. They’ll be more involved and not give us as much freedom. Heres to hoping they deliver.

Linkin Parks album A Thousand Suns has reached the top spot on the Billboard charts, with 241,000 units sold. Its a pretty big slide from the bands 2007 release Minutes to Midnight which sold 623,000 units and debuted at number 1 as well. But theyre still number 1 so that should count for something. The music industry isnt the same as it was before. As far as singles go, the rock stars hit song The Catalyst hit number 27 on this weeks Billboard Hot 100. Theyre doing well for themselves but I really think they could be doing better. But I still extend my congratulations to the band for having a number 1 album.

Jake Shears has recently revealed that despite just releasing his latest album with The Scissor Sisters, the band is already back in the studio and recording a new album. He said Banging! It’s crazy, insane and sexy. I feel really freed up after making Night Work. It feels like I’ve got some elbow room – I don’t feel like I’ve got those weird demons on my shoulders now. It took the band to a great new place that we really wanted to go. It’s incredibly exciting. We’ve recorded some amazing stuff. The last time in the studio we were just laughing so much, leaving it every day so happy. It’s fun making dance music. I’m super-obsessed with it again, it’s all I want to listen to. All I want to do is go clubbing!

Taylor Momsens band mate Ben Philips of the Pretty Reckless recently revealed that the precocious Gossip Girl actress turned rock singer loves to play with fire literally. He said Taylor loves setting things on fire, so this is great. Taylor thinks we’re some rock ‘n’ roll badasses. In the studio, there was this pit where the owner would burn stuff. We’d burn old keyboards, computers, stuff them full of TNT and set them on fire. Taylor loves fire. I shouldn’t say this. One morning, Taylor got into the studio really early – she’d just had her dog neutered and brought in the bits. Which she then burned. We were grossed out. It sounds to me like shes got a lot of issues.
Taylor Momsen is in the business of saying inconsistent nonsense. During an interview, the former Gossip Girl actress turned rock singer was called out on describing Rihanna as a rock wannabe. Taylor back peddled and said that she was misquoted. She said [I was] arguing the difference between rock vs. pop, and that its a very pop-oriented world at the moment, and that there is no rock. And people that dress [like rock stars] and have guitars in their music thats the closest thing audiences have to rock right now, and were looking to bring back a real rock band. I wasnt insulting Rihanna. Rihannas great. Assuming youre a rock star and implying that youre part of the only real rock band is a little presumptuous.
22-year old Charles Haddon of the band Ou Est Le Swimming Pool committed suicide last Friday night after he jumped off a telecommunications mast and into a parking lot at the Pukkelpop festival in Belgium. This comes in the same week that a man jumped to his death at a Swell Season concert. This is unbelievably awful and tragic. I cant even begin to think about the trauma that the people who had to witness the event may have. My thoughts go out to the family and friends of Charles and to the people who saw the tragedy. May Charles rest in peace.
Weezer has announced plans for a retro tour where the band will spend two nights in each city. The first night, they will play the entire Blue album, and the second night, they will play the whole Pinkerton album. Lead singer Rivers Cuomo said We’re just running it by promoters right now to see if there’s sufficient interest in the markets to do something like that, and if they’re on board, it’s gonna happen. The fan response has been incredible so far for the idea. And, if they want to, they can contact their local promoter and tell them to make it happen. Ill be shocked if this doesnt go down.
Kings of Leon lead singer Caleb Followill regrets talking smack about the bands huge hit Sex on Fire. The rocks tar said that he was ashamed of calling the song a piece of shit and called his new fans not fucking cool. Caleb said For a while there, I turned into someone I wasn’t proud of. I wasn’t appreciative of the admiration we were getting, and I said some things that I’m ashamed of. I hurt people who were genuine fans of the band because I was embarrassed to look out from the stage every night and see people who weren’t like me.
Many of Pink Floyds albums have been taken off the internet after a distribution deal with the iconic rock bands record label ran out. The Wall, Animals, Wish You Were Here, and The Final Cut have all been taken down from online digital stores because the contract with EMI actually expired on June 30. Reps for the band are working on securing a new deal to bring the music back for digital downloads. If they knew that the deal was set to expire, I wish they could have worked harder on securing a new one before it did so fans didnt have to wait in limbo.
With a recent hospitalization due to an attack, a cancelled tour and a painful limp, you would think that partying would be the farthest thing from Deryck Whibleys mind. However, the Sum 41 lead singer was seen out and about in Hollywood last week. I guess his way of recovery is one filled with alcohol and being surrounded by attractive women. Hopefully the rest of his band is cool with the partying especially since they cancelled their spot on the Vans Warped Tour for Deryck to get better. Whatever is up, Im still wishing the best for Deryck with his recovery.
