Scotty McCreery recently premiered the music video for his song “The Trouble with Girls”. The Mark Bright-produced country song serves as the second single from the American Idol winner’s debut album “Clear as Day”. The song is enjoyable but it’s failing to impress on the charts. Scotty has done a couple of high profile TV performances with it but he’s still very low on the Billboard 100 and nowhere to be seen on iTunes USA’s top 100. Anyway, the video is pretty nice with a sweet story behind it. It was actually shot at Garner Magnet High School in North Carolina where Scotty is currently a senior.
Kelly Clarkson has gone on the promotional route in support of her latest single “Mr. Know it All”, which comes off of her upcoming album that’s set to be released on October 24th. The American Idol alum went over to Australia to perform on this past Wednesday’s episode of X Factor. The pop singer was absolutely flawless in her performance. I just can’t get tired of watching her do live renditions of “Mr. Know it All”. And I have to say, Kelly is looking more and more fabulous each day. I wonder if she’s working out in preparation for a rigorous tour once her album comes out.
Pia Toscano recently premiered the music video for her debut single “This Time”. The American Idol album looks absolutely graceful and slightly angelic in the clip for the Ester Dean-written track. I love Pia and I love the song to death but the clip could’ve been something better. Nevertheless, all the beauty shots and pretty landscapes really go well with the song’s vibe. The performance shots in the city I could have done without. It just doesn’t fit with the rest of the video. I can forgive Pia and her camp though. The singer is very busy with the American Idol tour so I actually take my hat off to her for finding some time off to work on the video.

Next to take the American Idol stage was James Durbin, dressed in all black with lots of spikes and studs, performing with rock and roll legends Judas Priest on “Breaking the Law”. James was clearly having the time of his life. This whole performance screamed so much of an actual concert for me. There were some serious pyro going on and just an all out amazing performance. James even got a standing ovation from the judges. Why couldn’t he have been part of the top 2? It would have been a more exciting finale night if he was. Do you have something against pure rock stars America?

Round three of American Idol performance night saw the top 2 singers take on the songs that they’ll record if they win. Scotty McCreery got “I Love You This Big”. This was actually a good song, especially for the finale. I guess it pays to have Jimmy Iovine involved. It has a good hook and I think it would do well on the radio. Scotty owned it too. Lauren Alaina got “Like My Mother Does”. This was actually better than what Scotty got. After her performance, I think it was pretty much nailed down that she’s going to win. While she sang it very well, I think it will have little to do with that. Round three for me, as well as for the judges, goes to Lauren.

We finally found out which two singers will be battling it out on American Idol season 10’s finale next week. After all the commercials, video packages and guest performances, Ryan Seacrest was handed the envelope, the lights were dimmed and someone was sent home. I was hoping for the top 2 to be Scotty McCreery and Haley Reinhart but after the performance night seeing Haley deal with some of the toughest songs and the judges siding more with Lauren Alaina, I was really nervous about the elimination. And apparently, I had reason to be when Ryan revealed that it was Haley that was going home. They may be touted as the most talented bunch but this season had robbed so many great singers that I’m saying this sucks the most.

With American Idol season 10 coming to a close next week, I thought I should start writing on NBC’s own reality TV talent show “The Voice”. The show is already on its 4th episode and just finished the second round of the Battle Rounds. Cee-Lo Green’s team of Nakia and The Austin performed “Closer”, with Nakia moving on. Blake Shelton’s team of Elenowen and Jared Blake competed with “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”, with Jared moving on. Adam Levine’s team saw Angela Wolff take on Javier Colon on “Stand by Me”, with Javier moving on. Christina Aguilera’s team had Beverly McClellan and Justin Grennan do “Baba O’Riley” with Beverly winning the round. Did you catch the show? What did you think of their choices?
The top 3 singers on American Idol season 10 each got to perform 3 songs last night – 1 being their choice, another being Jimmy Iovine’s choice and the last being a judge’s choice. For the first round (singer’s choice), Scotty McCreery sang “Amazed”; Lauren Alaina did “Wild One”; and Haley Reinhart performed “What is & What should Never Be”. All 3 judges agreed that round 1 was for Haley. For the second round (Jimmy’s pick), Scotty sang “Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not”; Lauren sang “If I Die Young”; and Haley did “Rhiannon”. Randy Jackson and Jennifer Lopez give this round to Scotty while Steven Tyler votes for Lauren. For the last round, Scotty did “She Believes in Me”; Lauren sang “I Hope You Dance”; and Haley did “You Oughta Know”. Who do you think will be going home tonight?

America was shocked last night when American Idol favorite James Durbin didn’t get a coveted spot in the top 3. Most fans expected Haley Reinhart to be going home, especially with the amount of negative comments that she’s been getting from the judges. I actually thought this season was James’ for the taking. He may not have the best vocals each and every week but he’s the only guy who really went out there to perform and gave the crowd an amazing show. I always felt like he was doing his solo concert every week. Needless to say, I think James will be fine once he hits the real world of music. However, that doesn’t prevent me from saying that he got robbed.

Most of the performers were on top of their game for this past Wednesday’s performance night on American Idol while others failed to impress. With three weeks left to go in the competition, there’s just no excuse to just coast along. Before announcing who was at the bottom, Ryan Seacrest announced that there were 60 million votes cast. After getting reviews from Jimmy Iovine, we saw Lauren Alaina standing with Jacob Lusk, and James Durbin standing with Haley Reinhart. Scotty was asked to choose to stand with the duo who he thought was safe. When he refused, Ryan led him over to Haley and James and announced that they were safe. And as I had hoped, we said goodbye to Jacob last night. Did you agree with the results?

Bruno Mars performed his latest single “The Lazy Song” on American Idol’s results show this past Thursday. The reggae-sounding Smeezingtons production serves as the third single from the R&B/pop singer’s debut album “Doo-Wops & Hooligans”. As usual, Bruno’s vocals were flawless. I was actually half expecting him to come out with dancers in gorilla masks and perform like in the music video for the song. However, I was sorely disappointed with the AI crew though. It was made obvious that the performance wasn’t live when they decided to put a dog in the shot. One second the dog is up and about, the next it’s sound asleep. From technical difficulties to bad camera shots, someone in the technical department really needs to step up their game.

The Today Show recently unveiled a sneak peek to Jennifer Lopez’s music video for her new single “I’m Into You”. The Stargate-produced and Taio Cruz-penned track is the official second single from the Latina pop singer’s much-anticipated album “Love?”, which is set to hit stores on May 3. The sexy music video was shot last month in Mexico. However, due to policy issues of the sexual kind, I have yet to find the actual snippet on YouTube but did find a news source with a few screen caps of the video. In related music news, JLo’s American Idol performance was scheduled to go on next week but in a sudden change of plans, she will now be going on stage on this week’s results show.

TV is about to get bombarded with nothing but singing competitions as Christina Aguilera, Cee-Lo Green, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton have all signed on to judge NBC’s new show “The Voice”. The new show is set to rival American Idol and the US version of the X Factor. However, Christina has faith that the show will stand out because of the stellar judging panel. The pop singer said “We know what it’s like to get up on that stage. I was even a contestant on Star Search years ago. For me, I know what it’s like to be them. One of the reasons I was hesitant about doing a show like this was because I wanted to make sure I was a part of something very positive and not negative just for television’s sake. I wanted to bring positivity and a really honest perspective.” I can’t wait to see what they come up with.

Kelly Clarkson made her triumphant return to American Idol last night when she performed a duet with Jason Aldean. The pop star and the country singer delivered a fantastic rendition of their single “Don’t You Wanna Stay”, the second single from Jason’s fourth album “My Kinda Party”. The song has garnered huge success in the US and I’m sure it will gain even more steam after that performance. It was top notch. Jason did his thing but Kelly definitely stole the show with her beautiful vocals. It just made me want for her next album to come sooner. I hope the Idols took notes from her last night. Kelly is definitely a pro!

It looks like the masterminds behind American Idol aren’t going to let their newfound excellent audience-streak to go to waste. So it was that on last night’s episode they had the none too orthodox, but very inspired idea of bringing on Iggy Pop as a guest star on the show. The singer performed the song “Real Wild Child”. It’s probably the most surprising and also the most appreciated guest appearance on this season of American Idol and perhaps even on the whole show. This year truly is a year of firsts for American Idol. What’s next, a dancing squirrel band?

Last night’s Rock n Roll Hall of Fame episode of American Idol was a rare one, at least for this season, because no one was terrible. I guess the singers finally figured that it’s crunch time. I’ll just make one review of performances and it’s for Pia Toscano. She’s been choosing ballads for the longest time ever and she promised last week that she’d do an up tempo song this week. And finally we got it in the form of “River Deep, Mountain High”. Her vocals were amazing but she’s lacking in stage presence. Pia’s a great singer but not a performer. Now for my thoughts on who’s safe and who’s going home. I think Scotty McCreery, James Durbin and Casey Abrams are 100% safe, with Pia, Lauren Alaina and Jacob Lusk likely to be safe as well. I think the bottom 3 would be Haley Reinhart, Stefano Langone and Paul McDonald, with Stefano going home. What do you think?

It looks like the latest season of American Idol is spreading optimism all around… especially with the high-ups. After all of the records the tenth season has been breaking recently, it seems that FreemantleMedia’s CEO, Tony Cohen, believes the show might just attain the highest ratings a season of American Idol has ever reached. It looks like the new trio of Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler is really doing a terrific job and they are making their superiors proud as peach. It will be interesting to see how Simon Cowell is actually going to manage to top this one with his new pet project in the US.
After last week’s unfortunate situation for Casey Abrams and the fact that the judges used their only save of the season for him, this week on American Idol two of the bottom three contestants had to go home. This time around Casey Abrams was safe and the bottom three included Thia Megia, Naima Adedapo and Paul McDonald who was a first timer here. He is going to get another chance at being in the bottom three too because he was the only one that managed to get out while Thia Megia and Naima Adedapo were the sad ones who had to go home. Thus American Idol is still on track with nine more contestants to go and even though two girls got pushed out of the competition, the lead seems to belong to Lauren Alaina for the time being.
If I had any doubts that the judges’ save drama from last week’s American Idol was staged, they were crushed in the first minute of last night’s episode. Ryan asked the contestants last about the judges’ save like they already knew it was going to be used. I was offended then and I’m offended now. Pimping out Casey Abrams excessively is so unfair and definitely overkill. I’m also creeped out by Ryan’s obviously botox-treated face and highly annoyed at Jennifer Lopez’s constant interruption of Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler during their critiques. Speaking of Steven, I’m beginning to think that he’s the useless judge this season. He’s just not giving any solid advice.

Jennifer Hudson returned to the show that opened the doors of stardom for her. The now Oscar-winning actress and Grammy-winning R&B singer performed her single “Where You At” on American Idol’s results show last night. The girl has been everywhere in support of her “I Remember Me” album but the constant travels and performances seems to not affect her as Jennifer sounded stunning on the show. And if you thought that her male backup singer looked familiar, it’s actually George Huff. He was also a former AI contestant, appearing on the same season as Jennifer. He may not have made it big but he’s still singing with the best of them.

It looks like this American Idol season’s viewers pretty much know what they like and what they don’t. As proof of this stands this week’s bottom three which also includes two contestants that are on their return trip to this unfortunate situation. The bottom three present in last night’s American Idol episode is comprised of Karen Rodriguez, Haley Reinhart and Naima Adedapo. The first two are the unfortunate ones that have apparently made it on the bottom three for the second time and one of them is actually going to get the chance to do it a third… although that would be a very unfortunate thing indeed.

The results show of American Idol bugs me as much as the song choices that the contestants made this week did. From the butchered opening performance to mics not being turned on at the right time, I was wishing it wasn’t a live show but rather a pre-recorded one. And then there’s the fluff of a Ford commercial, loads of fillers and the audience getting a free 10-year anniversary CD. Don’t even get me started on the contestant interview and Pia Toscano being censored for saying “shih tzu”. Another lame part had to be the St. Patrick’s Day lighting gag. Why are you doing this AI?

After being the very first American Idol contestant to use a stand-up bass as an instrument, Casey Abrams has once again broken new ground by singing Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. Last night’s American Idol episode was all about songs from the contestant’s year of birth so Casey Abrams made a very interesting and unique choice. He also used a bass on stage. As for the performance itself, Casey Abrams is definitely no Kurt Cobain and his rendition wasn’t really one hundred percent accurate, but he did manage to get into the spirit of things and that seems to have counted a lot with the judges. Steven Tyler actually said that Casey Abrams is “so crazy, so good and so talented and that is the perfect match”.

For last night’s American Idol episode contestant Lauren Alaina chose for her personal idol performance Shania Twain’s “Any Man of Mine”. It seems that even though Lauren Alaina did a pretty good job with the song, that’s all it was: a pretty good performance. The judges were expecting something more extraordinary and that was their main point of criticism. Steven Tyler however did seem to be on Lauren Alaina’s side more then the others. It does look like this was her first slip-up of the season, but hopefully this won’t hinder her chances of making it to the end of the show.
