Just to show how American Idol is on the edge of the music industry, this week?s show had a theme of Neil Diamond songs. I guess they forgot to say that it was the outer edge of the music industry they were on. The Idols sang two songs each this week, each having a turn before their 2nd song. Jason Castro sang ?Forever in Blue Jeans? and ?September Morn?. David Cook sang ?I?m Alive? and ?All I Really Need is You?. Brooke White sang ?I?m a Believer? and ?I Am? I Said?. David Archuleta sang ?Sweet Caroline? and ?America?. Syesha Mercado sang ?Hello Again? and ?Thank the Lord for the Night Time?. And I thought Andrew Lloyd Webber week was lame.

If you were one of those people who Mariah Carey left high and dry at her CD signing at Universal City Walk last week, the curvaceous diva has arranged something for you in her efforts to make nice of what she did. Mariah left the event without signing the CDs for about 100 people that had been guaranteed that she would give her autograph. If you were one of the jilted fans, take the blue wrist band that was given to you with the purchase of her album back to the Hard Rock Caf? at City Walk on April 25. Alicia Keys made comments about ?gangsta rap? in an interview with Blender magazine which she says were misinterpreted. The 27-year old singer was quoted in saying ?Gangsta rap was a ploy to convince black people to kill each other. Gangsta rap didn?t exist.? What a conspiracy theory, huh? In a statement issued by J Records, Alicia now says ?My comments about `gangsta rap? were in no way trying to suggest that the government is responsible for creating this genre of rap music. The point that I was trying to make was that the term was oversloganized by some of the media causing reactions that were not always positive.?
A dozen years after the breakthrough debut of Jagged Little Pill, an album which earned four Grammys and spawned a dedicated worldwide fan base, Alanis Morissette remains not only an enduringly popular artist, but one whose success stems from a fierce commitment to authenticity and, to an equal extent, vulnerability. Both of these traits enable her to climb to new ground with her forthcoming album, Flavors of Entanglement, due June 10, 2008 in the United States and June 2, 2008 internationally from Warner Bros. Records.
This piece of news is already getting old but if it?s happening, I might as well write about it. According to the new Soundscan singles chart, Madonna knocks off Mariah Carey from the top spot this week. The Queen of Pop?s ?4 Minutes (To Save the World)? stays even with sales from last week but the curvaceous diva?s ?Touch My body? drops more than 40% in sales to come in at the number 4 spot. That doesn?t bode well for Mariah?s single or her album. Considering that it?s not even out yet and sales are already dropping, it may result in a flop. Maybe that full album leak has something to do with it.
